Ireland’s olympic team of 65 for London 2012 was unveiled yesterday at the National Concert Hall. With all those involved having achieved the A standard or tougher qualifying mark it is an exceptionally strong team.
Chef de Mission Sonia O’Sullivan was unwilling to put a number on the expectation for medals.
The athletes represent 14 different sports with Kieran Behan in gymnastics and Sanita Puspure in rowing for the first Olympics in a very long time. Natalya Coyle in modern pentathlon and Lisa Kearney in judo are making their Irish debut at the games.
Athletics is the best represented sport with 15 women and seven men. There are 8 in the equestrian group and in sailing, 6 in boxing, 5 in cycling, 4 swimmers, 3 canoeists, 2 from triathlon and badminton, 1 each from shooting, gymnastics, rowing, modern pentathlon and judo.
Won’t be long now…
