Irish Womens Rugby Team 2013

The Irish Women’s RBS Six Nations Rugby decider against Italy, with a first ever Grand Slam at up for grabs, will be broadcast live this Sunday on RTE television for the very first time as well as online and on radio.

Historic wins over England and France during this year’s RBS sponsored Six Nations have put Fiona Coughlan’s team one game away from the Grand Slam and a place in history.

As well as live TV coverage, the game will also be streamed live on RTÉ.ie within the island of Ireland, as well as regular live radio commentary updates.

“This is a significant investment by RTÉ in the women’s game and we are delighted to be able to bring the match to Irish audiences across all our platforms,” said RTE Head of Sport Ryle Nugent. “The team’s achievements in the Championship this year have been phenomenal and we wish them the best of luck in Sunday’s game.”

“We are delighted to have been able to secure broadcasting rights from the Italian Rugby Football Union to allow RTÉ to broadcast this historic game,” added the new IRFU Director of Communication, Stephen McNamara.

The announcement is the latest joint commercial venture between the GAA and the players’ body and will help generate funding for a range of player welfare and development programmes.

Speaking at the launch GPA President Donal Og Cusack said “The launch of gaelicboots.com is a very significant step in the joint commercial operations between the GPA and GAA,”.

“It will raise funding for player welfare initiatives, at both county and club level, and we hope players and fans will use the site and spread the word.”

GAA President Liam Ó Néill welcomed the announcement as “a further indication of the ongoing co-operation between the GAA and the GPA.”

Inter-county players Pádraic Maher (Tipperary), Lee Chin (Wexford), Cillian O’Connor (Mayo), Patrick McBrearty (Donegal), and Ciarán Kilkenny (Dublin) were all unveiled as brand ambassadors for gaelicboots.com.

On Monday Offaly footballer Tony McTague and Limerick hurler Eamon Cregan joined the 30 legends from the two Millennium teams in the new Hall of Fame.

Announcing the new exhibit, GAA President Liam O’Neill said on the GAA website “Former players have a special place in the history of the GAA and nowhere is this captured better than in the GAA Museum where their achievements are highlighted and revered. This new facility will serve as a permanent reminder to the greatness of the players who adorned our game at the highest level. It is important that these players are remembered not only by those who were lucky enough to see them, but crucially by those who did not have that privilege. This is one way of assisting in that process and I congratulate them and their families.”

Tony McTague won back-to-back All-Irelands for Offaly in 1971 and 1972 while Eamon Cregan, an All-Ireland winner with Limerick in their last win in 1973, has been a hurling legend for decades on and off the pitch and played with his club Claughan long after lesser men had retired.

A committee of O’Neill, Christy Cooney, Nicky Brennan and journalists Seán Moran and Martin Breheny selected the two new inductees and they will do so every year.
